WELCOME TO THE GAYBOURHOOD | XR introduces the audience to a 10-centimeter-tall holographic spirit who lives in a queer dollhouse. The spirit invites you into a conversation about what a “home” means to you. Together with the spirit – through conversations and interactions – you explore how we are expected to live, and whether the “adult” choices we make are truly our own.Student housing, communal living, or assisted living: living with housemates is seen as a charming interim phase, but never as an end goal. Communal living is for the pitiful, the floaty, the fallen, and those who can’t manage on their own.But in a society where loneliness, polarization, and housing shortages are growing problems, and where truly living together is shameful, can we ever move past that? Isn’t isolation built into the blueprint of our homes?WELCOME TO THE GAYBOURHOOD | XR uses the alternative physical living situations of queer people, past and present, as examples for a lesson and a question posed to the audience:“Did you really choose the way you live now?”A children’s show for adults, in which we talk, craft, play with dolls, and question what it means to be the “perfect citizen.”
