Exodus
A virtual reality experience placing visitors inside a living miniature world shaped by stories of migration, memory and displacement.
Created by theatre collective Hotel Modern in collaboration with Innovation:Lab, Exodus transformed the signature miniature worlds of Hotel Modern into an immersive VR experience. Inspired by memories and testimonies of refugees, visitors entered a fragile landscape of moving figures, shifting environments and cinematic storytelling, experiencing migration not from a distance, but from within.
About Exodus
Drifting above a devastated and abandoned city, the viewer glides into a stream of refugees: hundreds of people carrying luggage through the desert by foot, car and truck. Created by internationally renowned theatre collective Hotel Modern, Exodus marked the company’s first Virtual Reality experience, placing visitors directly inside their iconic miniature worlds. Inspired by recollections of refugees and themes of war, displacement and survival, the project evolved into a cinematic VR installation that made feelings of perseverance, alienation, uprooting and loneliness tangible.
About the Technology
Using Virtual Reality, 3D scanning, VIVE trackers and custom tracking systems, Exodus transformed Hotel Modern’s handcrafted miniature worlds into an immersive digital environment. Spatial audio and cinematic worldbuilding placed visitors inside scenes of migration and displacement, creating an adaptive VR experience where physical scenography, movement and storytelling merged into a living virtual world.
